INEGI is an Institute created in 1986 within the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Faculty of Engineering) at the University of Porto, Portugal. It acts as an interface between research and industry/market, with activities that cover all topics of interest in this area of engineering. The primary mission of INEGI is the pursuit of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer. INEGI is an institution with the 'public utility' status and, in legal terms, a “Private Non-profit Association” with the Faculty of Engineering as major stakeholder. One of INEGI's priority areas has been Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency. INEGI is qualified to develop and test new energy technologies, since the design to the industrialisation stage. The range of energy technologies includes mobile, stationary, industrial and residential applications.

The Institute of Thermal Engineering is part of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Graz University of Technology (TU Graz). The institute employs a scientific staff of currently 35 researches and covers the research areas Thermal Energy Systems and Biomass, Bioenergy Clean and Sustainable Systems, Solar Thermal Energy Systems, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Heat Pump Technology, District Heating and Utilization of Waste Heat and Energy Efficient Buildings. The experts of IWT have a long-term experience in heat pump technology and solar thermal systems. IWT has been and is active in many international projects, e.g. several Tasks of the IEA-SHC, Annexes of the IEA-HPP, and in European projects like MacSheep and COMTES. Furthermore, the experts of IWT have an extensive experience in experimental and numerical research on thermal biomass conversion, especially combustion, pyrolysis and gasification. The IWT has a close cooperation with several biomass combustion and gasification plant developers and manufacturers, being involved in more than 10 projects related to these topics in the last 5 years, including the H2020 BRISK 2 project for integrating research infrastructures in biomass conversion.
SOLARFOCUS is an SME founded in 1993 that employs actually around 185 persons and is specialized in the development, production and sale of biomass-boilers, solar-thermals collectors, air/water heat pumps and complementary goods like freshwater-modules and storage tanks for SFH, MFH and non-residential buildings. Furthermore SOLARFOCUS provides consultancy and training services for its partners and customers and has an in- house servicing division. 70% of its products are currently exported into EU.
The R&D department consists actually of 12 highly motivated employees, who work in the area of software/control engineering, calculation and design/construction. SOLARFOCUS has participated already on several regional, national and European projects in order to develop new products and services.
Hargassner is one of the big players in Central Europe’s small-scale biomass boiler industry and is located in the northwest of Upper Austria. The company was created in 1985 and currently employs over 250 staff. Of those, about 35 engineers and technicians work in the research and development department. The budget for R&D in 2017 is around 5 million euros. The annual production volume currently amounts to 8,000 units. Major markets are Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Spain. From the company’s birth, over 90,000 furnaces and boilers have been sold. The product spectrum ranges from pellet and wood-chip boilers for domestic heating to biomass fuelled micro-CHP plants. Hargassner has a special strategic interest in efficiency improvement and emission reduction of small and medium size biomass boilers, and in further development of micro-CHP plants using different (cheap) biomass fuels.

Complex has been in the market since 1987. It is one of the first limited companies registered in Katowice, Poland. The main profile of Complex is to design and manufacture professional electronic analogue and digital circuits, as well as specific purposes equipment. It also assembles SMD (Surface Mounted Devices) and THT (Through Hole Technology) units. Over one half of its production goes for exportation, mainly to Germany. The company has specialised in control systems for HVAC applications, and developed innovative and wireless solutions. The company profile perfectly matches the allocated tasks in the Hybrid-BioVGE project. In 2009 the company was awarded as one of the 500 most innovative companies in Poland.

The University of Bologna (UNIBO), founded in 1088, is the oldest university in Western Europe. The activities related to European funding programs are supported by the European Research and Innovation Office; with more than 10 years of experience on European projects. UNIBO is member of the major European Networks and stakeholder thematic groups, such as the European Technology Platform. UNIBO counts 11,000 research products (annual average) and 200 patents in the portfolio. UNIBO has obtained 91 million Euros from the Seventh Framework Programme and other programs financed by the EU, from 2007 to 2013. Today, UNIBO is the first Italian university for the attractiveness of European funding for research (projects funded in 2007-2012).
